Naturally prone to dryness, hair can be extremely vulnerable when colored, bleached, permed or styled with hot tools. Deep conditioning is essential to strengthen hair and maintain its elasticity. But treatments can contain lots of dangerous chemicals. In order to treat your hair safely, welcome a natural and vegan deep conditioner in your hair care routine!

Regular Hair Conditioners vs Deep Conditioners

Deep conditioner and regular hair conditioner are two types of hair care products that serve different purposes.

The “Regular” Hair Conditioner…

Regular hair conditioners usually sit in people’s shower, probably in yours too, next to your regular shampoo. Very close to shampoo consistency, regular hair conditioners provide numerous benefits such as detangle hair, reduce frizz, and improve manageability. Regular conditioner is usually applied to the hair for a short period of time, often just a few minutes, before being rinsed out. A natural regular hair conditioner can be used daily.

…VS The Deep Conditioner

Deep conditioners are different. Much thicker, they are designed to provide more intensive hydration and repair to the hair, resulting in a more noticeable and long-lasting effect on hair than regular conditioners. In addition, heat can be applied to speed up and improve the deep conditioning’s benefits. Generally, all it take is one hair treatment to see improvement in shine, thickness and softness. Deep conditioner is usually left on the hair for a longer period of time, often up to 30 minutes or more, to allow the ingredients to penetrate deeply into the hair shaft. Richer in active nutrients, deep conditioning is more of a once-a-week treatment.

It’s essential to give them some love and nourish them. But it’s hard to find an effective, natural, vegan and cruelty-free solution that works for your hair. Deep Conditioning your Hair in a Nutshell

First, read carefully your vegan deep conditioner label to know if there is a particular process you must follow, and how long to leave it on your hair.

Your hair must be clean: wash them with a natural shampoo and make sure all foam is rinsed out. Then:

  • Spread your natural deep conditioner from tip to root/scalp. This is because the tip of your hair is the “oldest”, and has been the most prone to damage and dryness. Once all your hair covered, leave it on for 5 to 30 minutes, depending on your hair and the deep conditioner (carefully read the label!).
  • When applying a deep conditioner for the first time, start out weekly – if your hair starts feeling weak, lessen to every 2 / 3 weeks. If it still feels damaged or dry, go for deep conditioning twice a week (maximum).
  • Warm conditioner works better. Heating your deep conditioner up to 95°F (35°C) increases absorption of all the good nutrients provided by the product. For best results, try heating your deep conditioner in a hot bath rather than in microwave.
